Best vegan chocolate cake ever!

Who doesn't like a chocolate cake? Even as a vegan we don't have to give up our sweet tooth! I do this cake for everyone within my family when birthdays or special occasions come around and have yet to hear a complaint! You will find once you make this the requests even from meat eaters keep coming, my niece loves it.

It is a very simple and affordable recipe with no need for blenders or an other type of kitchen equipment, with valentines just around the corner it is the perfect dessert to add a bit of sweetness to the day.


  • (300 ml) plant based milk (soy, almond etc...)

  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

  • (150 g) vegan butter

  • 3 tbsp golden/agave/maple syrup (use your favorite liquid sweetener (maple I have found is not as sweet as the others)

  • 2 (275 g) plain (all purpose) flour

  • (175 g) Brown sugar

  • 4 tbsp unsweetened dark cocoa powder

  • 3 tsp baking powder

  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)

For the chocolate frosting:

  • (75 g) vegan margarine/butter

  • (200 g) powdered icing sugar

  • 4 tbsp unsweetened dark cocoa powder

  • 2 tbsp water

1- Combine all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl and combine with a wooden spoon, you may have to use your muscles here, I ask my husband to help me here, then pre-heat the oven at 180 degrees.

2- The cake batter needs to have a soft running consistency and must not be too watery, if the consistency is too thick then try adding a bit of water and mix again.

3- Spread the vegan butter around your baking tray so the mixture does not stick.

4-Pour the cake mixture into the cake tray.

5- The oven should be nice and warm now, insert the baking tray into the oven and cook for 35-40 min.

6- While the cake is cooking, you can begin to prepare the chocolate icing, do this by placing all ingredients in a small bowl and mix with a spoon until a thick consistency is created, then leave this on the side to rest.

7- When the cake is cooked, allow 20-30 minutes for this to cool down before you coat with icing.

8- Voila you have a beautiful home made chocolate cake, enjoy this amazing cake with family or friends with a nice cup of tea or coffee.
